  • and/or the life situation of a partner in the third person.

[edit] Materials

[edit] Lesson

[edit] Intro

  1. Put the Alicia Lopez/Personal information dialog transparency up on the overhead and as students come into the class, set them in pairs to practice reading the dialog.
  2. When the class has assembled, begin choral practice of the dialog, with emphasis on pronunciation and rhythm.
  3. Tell the students, "Today you're going to learn how to introduce yourself and write a short story about your life."

[edit] Presentation

  1. Put the Alicia Lopez transparency up on the overhead.
  2. Ask students to read the paragraph to the class, giving several students a chance to participate.
  3. Read the paragraph chorally with the class, emphasizing pronunciation and rhythm.
  4. Point out that each sentence in the paragraph begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. Circle these punctuation marks and then number the sentences. (There are twelve sentences.)
  5. Brainstorm with the class to generate a question for each sentence. (E.g. What's your name?, etc.)
  6. Divide the class into A and B sides. Side A asks the questions while Side B answers them from the overhead paragraph. Students read the Loren Ortiz paragraph. Switch teams, etc.
  7. Depending on time and the class level, ask the teams to translate the dialogue into the 3rd person and repeat step 6. (E.G. Side A: "What's her name?" Side B: "Her name is Alicia Lopez." Etc.)"

[edit] Application/activity

  1. Group students in pairs or small groups and hand out one of the four writing prompts to each pair or group.
  2. Instruct students to invent a story for the person(s) on their prompt. (Circulate and provide support as needed.)
  3. Invite students to read their stories to the class. (It's fun, at this step, to compare and contrast the different stories groups have created for like photographs.)

[edit] Test

  1. Pass out Alicia Lopez/Blank prompt and instruct students to write their own stories in the space below the photo box.
  2. Collect the stories and check for errors.
  3. If a digital camera is available, it's fun at this point to attach a photo of each student to their personal story and mount the photos on the wall.
  4. As an additional step -- to evaluate reading skills -- create a simple quiz based on the students' stories. (E.G. "Where is So and So from?" or "Who is from this or that city?" Etc.)
