Changchun City is the capital of Jilin Province and is situated in the middle of the Songliao Plain in Northeast China.

Changchun is a rapid-developing city. From the time the CHI Preacher moved here in 1999 'til now, he have witnessed its growth, and noted its changes. Nowadays, people complain about the traffic, the pollution, the crowd but like many good cities, it has a lot of places of interests and attractions.

It's an eventless route from the airport to the city proper. When you get to the city and traverse through Renmin Road (People's Rd.), the bloodline connecting the north and south part of the city, you can see the tall building (not quite the skyscrapers yet) sprouting, giving one a clear indication of the city's progress.

Culture Square landmarks

The Culture Square in Jiefang Road (Freedom Rd.) is in the center of the city. It can be easily recognized by its towering monument of two white-square tiled pillars that seemed to reach up in the sky. On top of this is a shiny bronze sculpture shaped like a dove. At the base of the monument stands another figure - an iron cast naked man with his arms outstrecthed as if welcoming those who dare come. Behind these is a remnant of a building used by the Japanese invaders to house the puppet government of the last Chinese dynasty. It was during that period that Changchun was known as Manchukuo.

It has long been known that if you want to learn the proper Putonghua (Mandarin, the official language of China) you must learn it in the Northeast. The city itself is littered with schools, colleges and universities. Two of the famous universities, Jilin University and Northeast Normal University have several campuses in separate sections of the city. It is common to meet students from many parts of the country, even from the southernmost Chinese island of Hainan.
