Tips on finding and using clip art for Wikigogy

[edit] Public domain clip art
Many sites host free collections of public domain licensed clip art. Here are some good ones
(please list more good ones :-) !)
- http://openclipart.org/cchost/media/downloads -- site under construction disarray; I hope maintainers will improve it soon. You can however download their public domain 132MB (compressed) clip art collection and browse it on your own computer with your preferred graphic viewer. It is not a great collection but available and public domain.
[edit] Photo
Photos can be good classroom materials.
To be used at Wikigogy, content must be from Public domain, Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 2 or later licensed source (unless you created it entirely yourself). Those are the three copyright license situations that permit you to re-license the content with our copyleft which is what happens when you put content on Wikigogy.
- Flickr.com Advanced Search has some photos that we can use. Check each photo's copyright before using it on Wikigogy however because copyrights are set at the individual photo level on Flickr.
- Use the Flickr Advanced Search and select
- [x]Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos
- [x] on Find content to use commercially
- [x] on Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon
- [x]Only search within Creative Commons-licensed photos
- The text This photo is public on Flickr does not indicate its copyright. The photo's copyright is above that on Flickr.
[edit] Copyrights matter
Many clip art collections are not compatible with Wikigogy's Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license. For example, clip art from Microsoft, such as distributed in Microsoft Office, cannot be used on Wikigogy because its license is incompatible with ours. Darn.
Gnu Free Documentation Licensed (GFDL) material, such as many images from Wikipedia, may not be used on Wikigogy. That license is incompatible with Wikigogy's Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license. The licenses may become compatible in the future but they are not at this time.
Check the license of the specific image you want to use. Some images on Wikipedia for example are licensed public domain and could be used here. Most are not.
To be used at Wikigogy, content must be sourced from Public domain, Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 or later or Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 2.5 or later licensed sources.
All material submitted to Wikigogy is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license.
DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION!
[edit] Free graphics tools
Please list only graphics tools you like and use. This is not a Web directory, but rather quality recommendations from folks who actually use stuff and like it :-).
- Inkscape -- good free opens source Scalable Vector Graphic (.svg) drawing tool. User:Roger used it.
- Gimp -- good free opens source .jpg .gif .png painting tool. User:Roger used it.
