Gmail is Google's free email service

[edit] Read Gmail

You can read your Gmail,

  1. at http://Gmail.com
  2. or you can download it into your email client via POP access
  3. or you can have it forwarded to some other email address

Gmail accounts are by invitation only -- email me, roger at rogerchrisman dot com, say you would like a Gmail invitation and I will send you one.

[edit] Sort list mail in Gmail's Webmail interface

This is for if you read your Gmail on the Web at http://Gmail.com. If you download it with POP into an email client or forward it to another email address you will want to do the filtering with those instead.

I sort email list mail in my Gmail's Webmail account with Filters that apply Labels and also Archive the messages. Here's howto:

  1. Sign into http://Gmail.com and click on Settings at top of page
  2. Click on Filters at top of Settings page
  3. Click on Create a new filter at bottom of Filters page
  4. In To field put the email address of the email list that you want to filter messages from (not the From field because that contains the address of the message author; the To line is where the email list address is in email list post). Leave the other filter fields blank and click Next step
  5. Check [x] Skip the Inbox (Archive the message)
  6. Check [x] Apply the label:, create a new label in the dropdown box and select your new label. I use the name of the email list as my label.
  7. Click Create filter

New incoming messages will be filtered thus and you will find them by clicking on your new label under Labels in your Gmail account's left sidebar.

You cannot apply the filters to messages already in your Inbox. Instead however you can apply your new email list label to those messages manually and archive them at the same time.
