Common jargon of the English language teaching profession

CALL — computer assisted language learning is using computers to learn language, such as English.

CLT — communicative language teaching, an approach that emphasizes the importance of communication in the target language

EFL — English as a foreign language, i.e. in countries where English is not the native language

ELT — English language teaching in general such as to native speakers of English

ESL — English as a second language, i.e. in countries where English is the native language

ESOL — English to speakers of other languages in general meaning both EFL and ESL

L1 — First language, mother tongue

L2 — Second language, generally the target language of study

S — Student

S1, S2, S3, S4, S5... — Students of a group (student-1, student-2, student-3, student-4...)

Ss — Students

T — Teacher

TEFL — Teaching English as a foreign language, i.e. to locals in countries where English is a foreign language

TESL — Teaching English as a second language, i.e. to newcomers in countries where English is the native language

TESOL — Teaching English to speakers of other languages in general, TEFL and TESL inclusively. Also the name of an organization, TESOL Inc
