- Students will be able to remember and apply the four rules for spelling the progressive (-ing) ending.

- able to write simple words
- can use the progressive tense verbally
- can differentiate between consonants and vowels

- Progressive spelling/Warm up quiz
- Progressive spelling/Captain's rules and goals
- 4 research station sheets
- Station 1: Progressive spelling/-ing spelling rule 1
- Station 2: Progressive spelling/-ing spelling rule 2
- Station 3: Progressive spelling/-ing spelling rule 3
- Station 4: Progressive spelling/-ing spelling rule 4

90 minutes
[edit] Introduction
- Pre-set one corner sheet at a or desk (or tape them up on the wall) in each corner of the room.
- As students arrive, give them a warm up quiz and ask them to work on it alone.
- When most students have completed the quiz, ask, "Was that easy or hard? How many do you think you got right?"
- Say, "Yeah, it's confusing, isn't it? Well, today you're going to learn how to spell any -ing word, no trouble."

- Divide the class into groups of four and ask them to choose a team captain.
- a. Tell the team captains that their job will be to keep their team focused on working on the project of the day until is complete. b. Ask each captain to assign one of three jobs to each member of their team:
- the secretary (who will do all the writing for the team)
- the time keeper (who will make sure the team stays on schedule)
- the English cop (who will remind the team to speak only English during the activity)
- Call the captains' together for a meeting.
- a. Give each captain a copy of the Progressive spelling/Captain's rules and goals, talk them through the rules and goals and point out the "research stations" in each corner of the room. (Make sure they clearly understand all the rules and goals.) b. Tell them the game will start as soon as they get back to their teams.

- Follow the Progressive spelling/Captain's rules and goals. (circulate and give support as needed.)

- Pass out and ask students to complete the Progressive spelling/-ing spelling quiz.
