  • As students arrive, give them a warm up quiz and ask them to work on it alone.
  • When most students have completed the quiz, ask, "Was that easy or hard? How many do you think you got right?"
  • Say, "Yeah, it's confusing, isn't it? Well, today you're going to learn how to spell any -ing word, no trouble."

  • Divide the class into groups of four and ask them to choose a team captain.
  • Tell the team captains about their job -- keeping the team focused on the activity until is complete -- and ask them to choose:
    • their secretary (who will do all the writing for the team)
    • their time keeper (who will make sure the team stays on schedule)
    • their English Ump (who will remind the team to speak only English during the activity)
  • Call the captains' together for a meeting.
    • Give each captain a copy of the Progressive spelling/Captain's rules and goals, talk them through the rules and goals and point out the "research stations" in each corner of the room, and make sure they clearly understand all the rules and goals of the game.
    • Tell them the game will start as soon as they get back to their teams.
