Discussing classroom teaching issues in TESL and TEFL worldwide.

  • about 10 messages a day on the main list
  • about 7,000 members have their subscriptions active set to receive email (the roster is 31,000 members but with most set to no-email and the absence of a simple Web interface to the messages that is a misleading measure of readership)

[edit] Archive

(see http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/~tesl-l/commands.html)

The archives are only available through email commands. First you search the archive. Then you order messages by message ID number. tedious but it works.

First SEARCH the archives send an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU

In the message body put commands such as,

to search for messages containing specific words:

SEARCH exam or test in TESL-L since May 2006

to list all messages in the past x days (in this example the past 7 days):

SEARCH * in TESL-L since today-7

to list all messages in a specific period:

SEARCH * IN TESL-L from 1 February 2005 to 4 March 2005
  • Replace TESL-L with name of branch list to search branch lists
  • Replace * with a term or terms separated by or or and to make it a search instead of an inclusive message list.

After you send your SEARCH ... command you will get an email identifying corresponding message ID numbers.

Then GETPOST the actual messages you want to receive by message ID number (or number range) by sending something like the following in the body of a message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU

GETPOST TESL-L 12636 12640-12649 12658

(multiple lines are okay but start each line with GETPOST TESL-L)
