[edit] Add more Categories

The left sidebar is just a starting point and needs to be brief enough to be easily navigated. Here's how people will find categories not listed in the left sidebar:

  • An alphabetical list of all categories on Wikigogy that actually have a page in them can be view on the Special:Categories page. Only categories that have an article page listed in them will show there.
  • The (all teach), (all job) and (all life) links in the left sidebar go to the Teach, Job and Life categories. If you put a link to one of those "parent" categories on another category page it will be listed in that "parent" category (this is how subcategories are "created") and people will find it listed when they visit the "parent" category page.
  • When someone uses our site search box and finds a page on your topic, if someone has already put a link to your category on the bottom of that page (you can do this yourself if you want to by using our site search box to locate related pages and then put a link to your category on them), relevant categories can be found.

Welcome to suggest further categories below.

[edit] Teach subcategories needed

Davekees suggests some Teach subcategories.

Dave, thanks. I've made some into categories and left comments on others for now:

Methodology & Theory
I made those subcategories of Teach. Click the (all teach) link in left sidebar to see. --Roger 03:39, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Vocabulary
I made that a subcategory of Teach. Click the (all teach) link in left sidebar to see. --Roger 03:39, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Business English (normally a subset of ESP but such a big topic it usually commands a place of its own)
That is now a subcategory of Teach. Click the (all teach) link in left sidebar to see. --Roger 03:39, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Classroom management (discipline, organization, furniture & equipment)
That is now a subcategory of Teach. Click the (all teach) link in left sidebar to see. --Roger 03:39, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Reality English, Language immersion?
Don't know how to name this but it's the idea of taking students into the city to a mall, restaurant, hotel reception, bar, AmCham meeting, golf club, etc. to use English in real life situations.
Let's find out what others call this... Ideas anyone? --Roger 04:12, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Materials writing and development (teachers writing and publishing course books, teacher tips books, videos)
Wikigogy itself is for materials writing, development and publishing non-commercially, online. Category Publishing commercially might be useful. So it is now a subcategory of Teach and Job. --Roger 05:54, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Distance learning

Let's wait till someone writes a page on these topics and then let him or us categorize them. Anyone can create any category by just typing [[Category:Some topic name]] at the bottom of a page and that page will be in that category (and the category thus created). To list a category within another, just put a link to the "parent" category on the "child" category's page. --Roger 04:51, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Dave Kees suggests:

CALL - Computer Aided Language Learning (online and blended learning, FLASH programming)
Telephone English (Teaching via the phone.)
Blended learning (A mix of face-to-face and distance learning.)

[edit] Media

Podcasting (teachers issuing podcasts or mp3's that they create to suppliment their training. I think this is a new and upcoming hot topic)
Films and video
Newspapers
mp3's (downloaded from various sites, such as VOA's special English or Kelly's audio files)

[edit] Professional development

training
Category:Teacher training seems a useful category. Stuff about how to train to be a teacher could go in it, like TESOL certificate and TESOL degrees info. Qualifications is another possible label for this category but that would be slightly different and include language and life and professional experience which is maybe to broad a category to be quite useful as such. So I've created category Category:Teacher training and let's see if anyone writes any article for it :-).
seminars & conferences
see Current events -- linking seminars & conferences there chronologically works better than the alfabetical listing in a category would.
Book review
I made that, with no plural 's', a subcategory of Teach. I have also created a content type keyword book_review. Keywords are another way to help people find stuff on Wikigogy when they use the site search box.
