[edit] Bio
I was born in Ensenada, Baja California, Méxicointo what was eventually going to be a family of teachers. My dad, César Carrillo Aguiar, was an English teacher in secondary school. My mom, Elena Ortiz Anguiano, also taught secondary. She taught typing and short-hand. In time, my older brother, César Jesus, studied to be a teacher as well. My older sister, Diana, also became a teacher. She has been teaching sixth grade for many years now.
Pretty much everyone in my family speaks English, but we all learned in different ways. My dad spoke great English. Beside looking like a U.S. citizen, he spoke like one. I am not aware as to how he came to speak the language. My mother, on the other hand, never really learned to speak English although she does understand some things. My brother learned English through music. He would sing along to his favorite Beatles songs, which lead him to have fluency in the language. My sister began by listening to the radio. Every morning and afternoon, she would listen to KROQ radion station. With time she began to understand what was being said. Then, through English classes in school, she began to speak.
As for me, I learned watching Television. I am of the generation of Mexicans who grew up watching Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Electric Co. and all of those other educational programs on cable. My intention was not to learn the language, I just liked the muppets and cartoons. I then began to watch other type of cartoons like G.I. Joe, the Transformers, etc. I eventually moved on to sitcoms, dramas, and even soap operas for a while. All I knew was I understood what was going on and did not think much of it. The earliest memory I have of being aware that I spoke English is when my dad noticed I could speak. He was shocked because he did not realize when I learned and, to be honest, neither did I. I was about eight years old, and I already understood and spoke a lot.
Although my immediate family spoke English, I never practiced with them. Our individual activities and age difference did not really contribute to practicing English. My brother is nine years older than I, and my sister seven. We were aware of the fact the we knew English, and only that. Actual conversation was not a common day practice. Every now and then some words, phrases, or references would come up, but nothing more.
It was thanks to two cousing who lived three hours away that I truly experimented with the language. I have an aunt on my mother´s side, Tia Celita. Long ago she had married and American and immigrated to the U.S.A. They had two daughters, Jacqueline and Elizabeth. When we were kids, our families would frequent each other often. We would either go to El Cajon, or they would come down to Ensenada. Because we are about the same age, my cousins and I always got along great. We spoke English most of the time. Without being aware of it, everything I heard and saw on TV served as a basis for communicating with my cousins. They provided me with feedback on what I said, and also additional lexis, which was not shown on TV. One word that I clearly remember learning with them is "crooked". It was at their house. We were playing with some cards in the living room. I turned to the framed pictures on the wall and noticed one was tilted. I told, I think it was Elizabeth, that the picture was not right. She told me it was "crooked". I asked what that meant, and she told me that the picture was not straight like the others. I clearly remember repeating the word to myself and picturing the situation in my head. I was about seven.

I´ve been blogging for a few years now. The content of what I have been blogging has been a mix of personal and professional information; for the most part it has been about personal issues. It has been until recently that I have begun to ponder the idea of dividing what I write into separate blogs. Although I have not yet begun to write about professional issues, I do have short-term plans about it.
- Personal Blog - This is a Yahoo based blog, Y! 360. I originally began using it to leave my mark on the Internet. I started writing for myself, but it turned into a way of meeting people. I have had the opportunity to know, and read, people in the U.S.A., México, South America, and Spain. I write in English and Spanish.
- Professional Blog - This is my first blog ever. At first I did not know what to write about. I started doing homeworks, then some dispersed ideas. I later stopped writing for many months, and discovered Yahoo 360. I plan on using this blog for educational research. I will be writing in English.
